231 USD BOE announces candidates

The USD 231 Board of Education recently announced the top three candidates for the position of Superintendent of Schools.
At the earliest, the Board of Education expects to make a final decision by the end of April 2022.

Dr Brian Huff
Dr. Brian Huff has 29 years of experience in education. Dr. Huff’s career began teaching middle school math and science for four years. Since that time, Brian has spent 25 years in school administration as assistant principal, director of building and district operations, principal, assistant superintendent, and associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction. Brian and his family spent three years in Jos, Nigeria, working at Hillcrest School as missionaries with the International Mission Board, where Brian was the middle school and high school principal. Brian’s last 15 years have been in the Raytown School District, where he was recognized as the Missouri State High School Principal in 2013. Brian holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Southwest Baptist University, where he played football, a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Phoenix and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Kansas. Brian and his wife Beth have been married for 32 years and have six children and two grandchildren.

Mr. Joe sample
Mr. Joe Sample is currently Superintendent of Marais Des Cygnes Valley Unified School District 456 (Melvern, Kansas). Joe has 13 years of public education experience, three of which were with the Gardner Edgerton School District. Mr. Sample began his career as a grade 7 social studies teacher at Wheatridge Middle School. After three years, Mr. Sample was selected to be the vice principal of Iola High School. Joe then transitioned to senior principal at Baldwin Junior High, followed by his first full-time superintendent in Fort Larned Unified School District 495. Joe earned his bachelor’s degree in history/secondary education and his master’s degree in school leadership from Baker University. Mr. Sample then went on to earn his District Leadership License from Newman University. Joe is currently pursuing his PhD in Education in Educational Leadership at Baker University and plans to graduate in the spring of 2023. Joe is married to his wife Ashley and together they have four children (12, 10, 10, 8).

Dr. Jaret Tomlinson
Dr. Jaret Tomlinson began his career in education as a high school business teacher and coach. Since Dr. Tomlinson taught in the classroom, he has served as a high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. Jaret volunteers on many boards to increase his influence in the education community. Dr. Tomlinson holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, a Masters of Business Administration, a Specialist in Educational Leadership, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Saint Louis University. Dr. Tomlinson recently got engaged to his fiancée, Deborah. Jaret has a daughter who is a pre-med student at the University of Oklahoma. Her fiancé has a daughter in graduate school at the University of Missouri and works as director of Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council.
